In seminary a fellow student told me about the worst sermon he’d ever heard. It was based on this verse:
Genesis 5.24 KJV - And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.
The preacher began with this verse, paused, and continued, “And lemme tell you what Enoch was not: Enoch was not faithless! Enoch was not afraid! Enoch was not weak!” And so on. The preacher listed all sorts of things Enoch presumably was not.
Based on what? Well, here’s the entirety of what the bible has on
Genesis 5.18-24 NIV 18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.19 After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.20 Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah.22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years.24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
His name gets dropped in two genealogies.
Hebrews 11.5-6 NIV 5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.”Ge 5.23 For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.Si 44.16 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.Jude 1.14-15 NIV 14 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about them: “See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones15 to judge everyone, and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
Anyway. As you can see, there’s very little about Enoch in the bible altogether, which means there’s not a lot we can say Enoch was, much less was not. I mean he mighta been weak and afraid, though Hebrews makes it clear he certainly had to have had faith.
Let’s dig into the little we have.
